Ghosts in Time
First AD

SHORT FILM, 2016

Ghosts In Time, directed by Jimmy Nsubuga, has been selected for the British Urban Film Festival, the Harlem International Film Festival and the Toronto Smartphone Film Festival. In Ghosts In Time, Eve risks her life to travel back in time in order to change the events that caused the death of her parents.

Ghosts in Time is a unique project, in that every shot was filmed twice, once with a professional camera and once with a smartphone, to find out how much of a difference professional film equipment makes.
As the first assistant director, Nele was Jimmy Nsubuga's right hand.  She made sure the short film stayed on schedule and within budget. Jimmy: "Nele Mertens was a pleasure to have on set. She was organised, enthusiastic and hardworking. She made sure we were on schedule and without her the project would not have been as successful."
This is the full short film Ghosts in Time.

Deliberations series
Post Production Supervisor

5 SHORT FILMS, 2015

Deliberations is a series consisting of five short films that examine issues of medical ethics. It tackles several questions, such as 'What to do when a patient refuses care?', 'Can you refuse to perform a procedure when the patient's insurance doesn't cover it?', or 'Who gets to make the decision about a patient's life when the patient is delusional?'

Hadi Kaakour and Abbas Rattani, two students at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, came up with the idea to make a series of fictional short films to use in classes. They envisioned that the students would watch one of the films and then start a debate on what a doctor is supposed to do in certain situations and where to draw the line between right and wrong. When Kaakour and Rattani received funding through the Arsht BioEthics grant, they contacted the University of Miami Motion Picture Production Program in search of writers, directors, producers, cinematographers, actors and editors.

After directing Rock Bottom, one of the five shorts from the Deliberations series, Nele Mertens was hired as the Post Production Supervisor for all five short films. It was her responsibility to turn the rough cuts into fine cuts, to get the files to and from the sound designer, to do the final mix with dialogue, music and sound effects and to add the titles. Later on, Nele Mertens was asked to step in to replace the Sound Designer. In the end, Nele Mertens was extremely involved in the post-production of the entire series and she helped bring all five films to a successful conclusion.
