Rock Bottom is a fictional educational video produced by the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and directed by Nele Mertens. She was chosen from a pool of directors selected by professors from the University of Miami School of Communication. Rock Bottom is part of a series of five short films, called "Deliberations", which has to do with medical ethics issues and was made to be incorporated in classes to make medical students think about the consequences of doctors' decisions in several situations.
In Rock Bottom, a female plastic surgeon forms a connection with an insecure male stripper who turns to her for help. The ethical issue Rock Bottom deals with is what to do in case a patient refuses medical care. Can you try to convince a patient to do what's best for him or her or should you step back and accept their decision? Rock Bottom also explores the question of how much a doctor is supposed to care about his or her patients. When do you cross the line and care too much or on the other hand, not enough?
Nele Mertens directed, edited and did the sound design for Rock Bottom. After the other four short films had been filmed and edited by other UM students, Nele was also hired as the Post Production Supervisor and later also Sound Designer for all five short films. The producers (Hadi Kaakour and Abbas Rattani) trusted her with this task after witnessing her motivation and enthusiasm for the projects.
